Rabbit Health

Weigh Regularly

Catching gradual weight loss can be key to detecting illness early.

Check Teeth, Eyes, and Ears

Incisors (front teeth) should be aligned and not broken. Eyes should be bright and clear, not cloudy, crusty, or bulging. Ears should be clean and free of debris.

Trim Toenails

Rabbit toenails should be trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks. The House Rabbit Society has an excellent video. Nail trimming is also available at our rescue on Saturdays during regular store hours.

Check Bodies, Fur, & Feet

Bodies should be free of lumps. There should be no crusty or missing fur. Long-haired rabbits should be brushed daily to prevent matting, and short-haired rabbits should be brushed weekly.

Regular Vet Checkup

Although vaccinations are not required by law, rabbits should still see a vet regularly to ensure they are healthy and not hiding any illnesses.

Know Your Rabbits' Habits

No one will know your rabbits better than you. If you think your rabbit seems "off", you should make a trip to the vet.

Signs of Illness

If your rabbit exhibits any of these symptoms, they need to go to the vet:

  • Not eating or drinking
  • Not pooping
  • Sits with their face pressed into a corner
  • Has crusty eyes
  • Has crusty nose
  • Scratching excessively
  • Has head tilt
  • Appears puffed up
  • Losing fur
  • Has blood in their urine
